Pigmented print ink consists of solid powder form colorant which is suspended in fluid in a carrier. This type of printer ink is insoluble due to it's large molecules when compared to dye based inks. With the reflection of light it does not seem as vibrant as dye-based inks. However, the moleculars size of the pigmented printer ink can let the print last for a significantly longer period of time.

In recent years, pigment based print inks have far surpassed dye based inks on terms of fade resistance, water resistance and other factors. Pigmented print ink also takes less time to dry, more than 100 times faster than the dye based varieties. It can be printed on premium photo paper and photo transfers, almost all types of paper. However, the pigmented ink cost much more than dye based ink.
